Tutoring programs
Help fertilize the seeds of knowledge
It’s never too early to rev up the ol’ brain for school. But tutors and tutoring programs come in all shapes, sizes and prices. Here’s a sampling:
Residents of Solano and Napa counties can get assistance from online tutors with Live Homework Help at solanolibrary.com, 1-10 p.m. daily, all year round. (Spanish speaking tutors are available 1-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday.) Just enter your library card number online, or apply for a card if you don’t have one, and you’re good to go. The Homework Help webpage also has a list of hot homework topics, as well as resources for parents.
A large tutoring center such as the Sylvan Learning Center can provide assistance to students of all ages—pre-kindergarten through 12th grade—in subjects that range from math, reading and writing skills to state test and SAT/ACT preparation. Enter your address at sylvanlearning.com to find a center near you.
For some one-on-one help, personal referrals are usually a great way to go—but if your friends can’t supply a name, your child’s school may be able to make a recommendation. For example, the list of tutors maintained by Dixon High School includes teachers who offer after-school services as well as students with a California Scholarship Federation membership.
