Healthy reading for kids
Jeannie Howard
Natasha North, children’s librarian at the John F. Kennedy Library in Vallejo, offers up her top three health-focused books for kids.Ages 5-9
Lizzy Rockwell’s The Busy Body Book: A Kid’s Guide to Fitness (Crown Books for Young Readers, $15.95) introduces children to the wonders of the human body. “Diagrams illustrate how the skeleton, lungs, brain and other organs function,” says North. “The book invites readers to think about how these systems work when we exercise.” Ages 6-10
North recommends The Monster Health Book: A Guide to Being Active & Feeling Great for Monsters and Kids! (Holiday House, Inc., $16.95) by Edward Miller for its visual appeal and the array of topics it covers. “The goofy monster in the title shows kids how to make healthy choices about exercise and foods,” says North. “It also touches on topics such as avoiding cigarettes, getting enough sleep and self-esteem.”
Ages 10-18
North says that e.guides’ Human Body (DK Publishing, Inc., $17.99) will have kids “poring over the photography and illustrations and soaking up tidbits of useful information.”Do you like what you read? Subscribe to Solano Magazine »
