Cherries jubilee!

Cherries jubilee!
When spring comes in, a great family outing is picking your own fruit. Suisun Valley’s 99 Cherry Orchard offers 25 acres of Brooks, Rainier, Lapin and Bing cherries. The farm supplies buckets in a variety of sizes, and ladders; you supply the hands and taste buds. It opens to pick-it-yourselfers in May, though the first two weeks of June are usually superior in terms of ripeness. “It’s tough to predict,” says owner Spiro Pistiolas. “It depends on bloom and weather.” Planted in 1992, the farm is not considered organic, though Pistiolas says they’ve never had the need to spray the fruit. Cherry season lasts about three to four weeks.

Year-round, the orchard’s bakery, Knopp’s Bakery, sells dried fruit, nuts, honey products, Greek pastries and cherrywood roasted coffee. The bakery also makes its own fruit-flavored, house-made ice cream, with no preservatives or chemicals. On weekends, kids can enjoy pony rides. “It’s a little destination in the valley,” Pistiolas says. “We take pride in making sure everyone has a great time!”—A.C.
